Paints and Coatings
Formulations with nanocellulose improve paints and coatings’ viscosity, adhesion, and barrier properties, among others.
High‑performance materials from nature
What is nanocellulose and why does it matter?
Nanocellulose is the primary structural component of lignocellulosic biomass and one of the most promising biomaterials of our time. It is fully biodegradable and has been shown to have extraordinary properties, superior to fossil-fuel based products, that enhance material performance. It improves strength, transparency, rheology, thermal stability, and hydrophobicity across a wide range of industries and applications, providing a safe, renewable alternative to petroleum‑based additives and products such as plastics.
Although first developed at laboratory scale decades ago, the transformative potential of nanocellulose accelerated after the year 2000, when pilot plants — including GranBio’s plant in Thomaston, Georgia — began demonstrating its real‑world impact.
Our proprietary technology - BioPlus - is the only one in the world able to produce both CNF (cellulose nanofibrils) and CNC (cellulose nanocrystals).

Compared to other nanocellulose products, GranBio’s offers the following advantages:
Due to the versatility of our technology platform, we can use various types of forest and agricultural residues such as hardwood, softwood, corn stover, palm oil, sugarcane straw, and more.
Available as fibrils (CNF) or crystals (CNC), in hydrophilic and lignin-coated hydrophobic forms (L-CNC and L-CNF).
Less than 1% sugar degradation in digestor fractionation, resulting in high cellulose and dissolved sugar yields.
50–100°C higher compared to conventional nanocellulose.
Offered in award-winning masterbatch formulations for drop-in use to achieve unique performance characteristics across multiple industries, including a patent-pending nanocellulose drying process to improve dispersibility.
BioPlus™ CNC, CNF, L-CNC, and L-CNF are approved by the U.S. EPA for commercialization.
Our patented, industry-leading formulations for drop-in use have been tested and proven in commercial settings.
